Mosaic Case Studies

Atrium Health: Courageous Conversations Workshop

As one of the largest healthcare providers in the Southeast, Atrium Health has a great responsibility to their patients, teammates and community because they recognize the impact their behaviors have on the people they serve. To fulfill this responsibility, they constantly strive to be an inclusive, diverse and respectful workplace.

Atrium Health partnered with Blue Heel’s Mosaic Workshop as part of their Courageous Conversations initiative. The goal was to create a collaborative way to engage staff on current issues of racial healing and social injustice. Blue Heel’s virtual platform allowed for staff to discuss personal experiences, express their feelings then build Custom Socks together in real time as a group.

The result was a tangible outcome that best represented the shared experience. Each group member contributed to building the sock and everyone received a pair of what they created together. It also allowed for different groups to create their own socks on the same topic. The difference in designs prompted ongoing conversations between staff beyond the workshops. So people could better understand each other by literally taking a walk in each other’s socks. Bravo, Atrium Health!

Central Piedmont Community College, Vulnerable Populations Workshop

CPCC offered a course that focused on providing nursing care to vulnerable populations in healthcare. It encouraged students to practice empathy for those in vulnerable populations.  Each student group chose a different population of focus for the semester. They produced a final presentation assisting their peers in providing nursing care that demonstrated empathy and cultural competence for the particular group.

The groups selected from populations including the homeless, rural health, disadvantaged moms, refugee, mental health and substance abuse. CPCC then partnered with Blue Heel’s Mosaic Workshop as a way to wrap-up each focus group with the course virtually. By taking personal experiences with each population, discussing their feelings about it then creating Custom Socks in real time as a group.

The result was a tangible outcome (Custom Socks) that best represented the shared experience together. Each person contributed to building the group socks and received a pair as a reminder to “walk in the socks” of their patients.
